Reading some statistics, today is stated to be the deadliest day on the road. Hard to imagine with New Year’s Day, the 4th of July and many other holidays. Yet, Thanksgiving is the deadliest day. Over half the deaths are attributed to drinking and driving.
Be smart and stay alive. You do not want to hurt the ones you love, your self or even strangers. Read a few stories down about my friend Charlie. The driver who hit him never knew him. Today , this driver has to live with what he did for the rest of his life and my friend’s family has to live without him.

We are saddened by the tragic death of Miley’s driver, William Douglas (Bill). Miley, we know your pain. This is far from a sympathy post and anyone who know us, understands this. With the death of our grandson, we know and understand the pain and emptiness of such a loss.
Read his story and view his life here and you will know we understand. To the family of William Douglas, we know he will be remembered as will you.

As teenagers, we had a band together. He was so mellow and I was so hiper. Still, we got along very well. I remember on one of my trips to New jersey in 1991, I found out that his 3 yr old daughter had just died from Cancer. That was hard enough to deal with but the fact is, she never showed she was ill until the day before she died. That left my friend Chuck in a daze that can’t be explained. When I called him, I remember saying that I wanted to tell him I knew how he felt but I said I wouldbe lying. I didn’t know how he felt and he said I was right.
Well, this past July, I found out when my 10 year old grandson was kiled by a freak accident. All I could think of was remembering the words Chuck told me. I wanted so much to find him so I could talk with him because he understood.
Yesterday, I joined Facebook and began looking for old friends, Chuck included. I did find who I thought was his sister so I wrote her asking if she new Chuck. Today, I received my reply. She remembered me very well. Then she proceeded to tell me that in 2002, Chuck was walking his dog Easter Sunday morning when a drunk driver killed him. I wanted to so much talk with him and finding out he was gone also is very hard to take.
You tell me! What will it take to stop people from drinking and driving? This is the hard part of road safety. This happened in New jersey and the penalities are extreme in that state. So, even with such penalities, people will still drink and drive. What does it take to stop this senseless crime?
This is why we started our memorial website for people to upload a profile or memorial. They can do it to remember their loved ones, to find comfort or to offer comfort.
Good bye Chuck. You were a good friend in our teenage years and I will always remember you.

I was on my way home and the snow was still slowing to a stop. The roads were slushy with dry and wet patches. An SUV was in front of me, off the the left lane, driving into the slush in what seemed to be on purpose. The slush was being driven into my line of sight. As I slow down as not to get into his game, he slowed as well. Then, without any blinkers he decided to move into my lane (kind of). The slush was thick against my windshield. Without warning to him or me, he caught an extra rough patch and went into a spin, landing in the side of the road on my right side. I knew what to do as I slowed without applying my brakes, I gently went around him. I could see he was alright and could see cops everywhere, so I just kept going. Besides, there was no safe place for me to pull over to check on him.
Tips on this;
1) Know your limits in bad whether and roads.
2) Keep as safe a distance as you can. Make sure you allow extra time and distance in bad road conditions.
3) If someone in front of you spins out, only pull over if it is safe to do so. Many times, it is better to keep going and alert the police. In that same storm on I25, just north of Denver, two state troopers were investigating and helping others who were in an accident. Another can lost control and pushed the partol car into both officers. They were both injured in the crash.
More often than not it is better to let the professionals handle accident situations, expecially when bad whether and bad roads are the cause.

I still remember one of the trips I took back home to Edison, NJ back in 1982. New Jersey had just become the second state in the nation to adopt the mandatory seatbelt rule. My brother had to go to the store and asked me if I wanted to go. As we proceeded to his car, he yells at me with a bottle of open beer in his hand to make sure I buckled up because he did not want to get a ticket. Talk about backwards thinking!
So, today every state has some kind of seatbelt law. You better click it or ticket, right? But why a law? There are all kinds of laws against every form of true crimes, yet the government will impose what it thinks we must do to protect us. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for wearing my seatbelt and making sure every one in my vehicle has their seatbelt on. After all, our game has it’s foundation built on it. However, I would rather think I buckle up because it was my idea and not some government jerk budding into our lives.
I have been waering my seatbelt since 1964 when my father had them installed in his 1964 El Camino. It was the lap belts but I started wearing them right away. My cousin use to make fun of me saying, “are you afraid someone is going to steal you?” But, I continued to use my seatbelt and still do to this day.
There are laws against drinking and driving, yet, when I was in my 20’s, I would drink like crazy, get behind the wheel of my car, put my seatbelt on and drive home. And I made fun of my brother. I no longer drink and drive. I woke up a long time ago and it scares me to think of what might have happened had I gotten into an accident. Others are not so lucky.
So, as far as seatbelts go, are you for them, against them, and do you think our government should be involved in our decision making where we are concerned?
